Is your Chromecast still throwing errors? This fix will get you streaming again

Was your Chromecast device having issues? You're not alone.
Google has rolled out a fix, but you may have to take an extra step if you reset your device while attempting to fix the problem.
Second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio devices were facing a problem that prevented them from casting content. If you tried to use an affected device, you saw one of two errors -- either, "Untrusted device: [name] couldn't be verified. This could be caused by outdated device firmware," or "We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast."

Both error messages linked to separate Google support pages, but those pages didn't address this issue. The only other option was to close the dialogue box.
Older Chromecast devices affected
The issue seemed limited to older Chromecast devices, as no third-generation or Chromecast Ultra users reported the problem.
Frustration mounted on Reddit, where users have reportedly tried a number of fixes, including restarting the device, reinstalling Google Home, removing the device from Google Home and adding it again, restoring the device to factory settings, clearing cache data, and changing networks, but nothing works.

How to fix the issue - if you reset your device
Several days ago, a Google Nest representative on the official support forum posted, "We have started to roll out a fix for the problem with Chromecast (2nd gen) and Chromecast Audio devices, which will be completed over the next few days. Your device must be connected to receive the update."
The post warned, though, that if you factory reset your device attempting to fix the issue, "you may still be experiencing an issue where you cannot re-setup your device."

If you did reset your device, Google now has an answer. You'll just need to update your Google Home app to the latest version. For Android, this is 3.30.1.6. For iOS, it's 3.30.106. When you do that, you can set up your Chromecast like normal. Google says the update is rolling out in phases, so if you don't see it available now, you should soon.
Google didn't explain what went wrong. Most speculation on Reddit is that the issue lies in an expired certificate on the Google server.
